Featured Skater – July 2015
Derby Name/#: TBD! She’s currently “Freshmeat”!
Derby DOB: 5/4/2015
How did you find out about derby?
I found out about derby through fellow skater Schlitt Throat’s promoting at Parengo in Downtown Sikeston.
What made you want to try derby?
There were many things. Schlitt’s friendliness and enthusiasm definitely got me interested, but the team aspect is the reason I showed up. I missed having a group of girls to belong to and (eventually) contribute to. Also, the fact that it’s a contact sport didn’t hurt.
I understand you’ve had some health issues. Can you tell me more about that?
I was diagnosed with stage 2B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December of 2013. Cancer is bad, but I totally lucked out with this one because the survival rate for my age group is 93%. Thanks to my excellent doctor, 6 months of ABVD Chemo, and Jesus; I have been cancer free for just over a year. How has derby affected your life?
The question is how hasn’t derby affected my life? Haha! It has pushed me, physically, to places I haven’t been in years. It has made me get into the gym regularly and actually care about what I put into my body. But so much more than that, the dedication and friendship from girls and coaches has definitely made the biggest impact so far. I couldn’t imagine my life without this team now. I have no idea how other fresh meat have come for some months then disappeared!
